Understanding Percentages
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It is denoted by the symbol "%". Percentages are used in everyday life for calculating discounts, taxes, interest rates, statistics, and much more.
The Three Calculators Explained
- What is X% of Y? — Multiplies Y by X/100. For example, 15% of 200 = 30.
- X is what % of Y? — Divides X by Y and multiplies by 100. For example, 30 is 15% of 200.
- Percentage change from X to Y — Calculates (Y - X) / X * 100. A positive result means an increase, a negative result means a decrease.
Common Percentage Calculations
Percentage calculations appear in many contexts: shopping discounts (20% off a $50 item = $10 savings), tax calculations (8% sales tax on $100 = $8), grade calculations (45 out of 60 = 75%), and financial growth (a stock going from $50 to $65 = 30% increase).
Tips for Working with Percentages
- To find 10% of any number, simply move the decimal point one place to the left
- X% of Y equals Y% of X (e.g., 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4)
- A percentage increase followed by the same percentage decrease does not return to the original value
- Percentages above 100% represent values greater than the whole (e.g., 150% of 20 = 30)
