How to Calculate a Tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage (expressed as a decimal). For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10. Add the tip to the original bill to get the total: $50 + $10 = $60.

Standard Tip Percentages

  • 10%: Minimum acceptable tip for basic service
  • 15%: Standard tip for average service at sit-down restaurants
  • 18%: A generous tip reflecting good service
  • 20%: The modern standard for good to great service
  • 25% or more: Exceptional service or special occasions

Splitting the Bill

When dining with a group, this calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally among all people. Simply enter the number of people in your party and the per-person amounts update instantly.

Tipping Around the World

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, 15–20% is standard. In much of Europe, a 5–10% tip or rounding up is common. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is generally not expected and may even be considered rude. Always research local customs when traveling.
