About Word Counter
A word counter is a simple but essential tool for writers, students, marketers, and anyone who needs to track text length. Whether you are drafting an essay with a strict word limit, composing a social media post, or writing a long-form article, knowing your exact word and character count helps you stay on target.
This tool updates all statistics in real time as you type, so you never need to click a button to see your progress.
What Each Statistic Means
- Words — Total number of words, split by whitespace.
- Characters — Every character including spaces; the "without spaces" count excludes all whitespace.
- Sentences — Detected by splitting on sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?).
- Paragraphs — Blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.
- Reading Time — Estimated at 200 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed.
- Speaking Time — Estimated at 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for spoken delivery.
Tips for Writers
Most blog posts perform well between 1,000 and 2,000 words. Academic abstracts are typically 150–300 words. Tweets are limited to 280 characters. Use this tool to hit your targets every time without manually counting.
